The proper way to check the spark is to remove the s/plugs, disconnect the large main (red) electrical connector (as you have mentioned), then using a small jumper, jump from the battery side of the starter solenoid to the 3/8" hex nut on that solenoid (but not the gounding nut... the other one).<br /><br />The spark should jump a 7/16" gap, but the engine must be turning approximately 300 rpms in order to have the stator generate the AC voltage to energize the powerpack (the reason for having ther s/plugs out).<br /><br />If no spark, check the "brown brown/orange or brown/yellow" (whatever stripe is on that other brown wire) that lead from the stator to the powerpack. With an ohm meter hooked between those two wires, you should get a reading of approximately 630 plus/minus 75 ohms.<br /><br />If that reading is okay, the s/plugs are out, the red plug is disconnected, and the engine is turning over properly, that indicates the powerpack has failed.
