Ok, here's my story. Last summer took my boat out it wouldn,t start no spark. Put it on the trailer and did the jiggle test (stator plug wires, timer plug wires, coil wires from power pack) got spark, motor ran and started great for the next 4 days. Last fall went to winterize it no spark no start, battery fully charged. Tried jiggle test no results. Next step bought a manual and did the trouble shooting found out the stator was no good. Bought a new one and a power pack because it too was original. When I took the stator out I saw that the black w/yellow stripe wire had cracked insulation, OK found the problem that is the kill wire after all. Installed new stator and power pack, no spark. Checked the timer base and noticed the flywheel was rubbing on the bore. There was a small lump of gasket sealer under it cocking it to one side, cleaned that out got a new timer base. Guess what, NO SPARK! New stator, all the coils are open, marine store says originals are encapsolated, new ones aren't. New one is the same part that has been superceded. I tape up the exposed wire on the original stator and reinstalled it, I GOT SPARK. Has anyone had this problem with replacement stators? The part numbers are as follows:

Original stator #584 560

Superceded stator #763 763

The original has a 12 amp alternator, because I troll alot I want to keep it. By the way I can't return the stator I bought, No Returns On Electrical Parts! It almost seems like the magnets on the flywheel aren't energizing the new stator because it shows no voltage at all while cranking. With the original I get around 300 volts which according to the manual is normal.
