Help. I've got a Force 150, with a Thunderbolt ignition, that I am trying to get running. I am a weekend mechanic and am trying to get this thing going for some time know.
Here goes:
1st The LANLINE is in place.
2nd I am using the Clymer shop manual - Not 100% accurate!
What I know: The switch box (CD) fires the plugs.
The triggers are used by the CD for build up, fire sequence.
What I don't know: Where does the switch box (CD) get the 12 volts it needs from? The manual doesn't show it! The manual does show connections between the converter and the Switch Box(CD) ... three wires; black (ground) and two others (Blue & Vio/White). There is no explanation for these two wires. Trouble shooting guide says to confirm battery on the converters red lead. It is there, but the manual says crank the engine and this same 12 volts should go to 260-300v. This part I really question. Anyone else have a better approach to determining if the converter or switch box is at fault?
Sorry this is so LONNNGGG. Any and allll help is apprecaited.

Ken Z

Hi, I am no expert, but this is my thought.
If I am not mistaken, it should have a stator and a rectifier also in this system....maybe look them up in the manual for testing. If you dont get a response from one of the experts,do a search on your problem , like no spark, etc.

Don't appologise for being long.It sure helps to know what you've tried so far,and have your questions 'in a row' so to speak.
The way your system operates is illistrated fairly well in the manual, but is hard to locate (at least it is in mine). In mine, it is on page 278. On pg279,the converter box wiring is illistrated much better than the schematic in the tail of the manual. The 12VDC input would be converted, but also,it changes it to AC,so put your meter on 300VAC scale (if you haven't allready).
But i'm trying to figure out why you have spark at all at the plugs, if the switchbox or converter are bad. I'm sittin here, staring at the schematic...I see your dilema regarding the two wires (blu and vio/wht), but don't know iether, which is which
I can tell you one is HVAC (converter input),and the other is HVDC (converter output to switchbox cap),needed for the capacitor to store in the switchbox (the job of the converter).
The 12VDC comes from the red lead comming from the allways hot, battery-side of the starter solenoid ,going by what I see here.
But I'm thinking,if this engine has spark, try putting some fuel mix in a spray bottle.Give each carb about 5 shots of fuel, and crank it over to see if it sputters or runs.If so,the fuel pump is probably not working.
I know I probably gave you more questions than answers, but..I'll be back tomorrw night, and lots of other Force owners may chime-in with further assistance in the meantime.

OOps, forgot to mention, this motor has NO spark to any of the 5 plugs. And I am trying to determine which, the converter or the switch Unit (CD) is at fault (Both are VERRRYYY expensive). Plus, the design of this engine is very interesting and .... some what fun to work on. :D

ps The manual shows the converters red wire going to the battery. When I trace it it goes from the engine to some place under the dash....hmm

Thanks again all
Ken Z

Kill Switch/Lanline --- One and the same right?
If so, yes, And it is as needs to be to start engine. I even tryed it both ways. No spark in either case.

Re: No Spark on 1991 Force 150.... Help

Remove the white, or black/yellow-striped wire from the 3rd terminal from the top, on the terminal strip on the port side. Also, temporily remove and tape-off the blue,or blue wth black strip wire, second from the bottom, same terminal block. You'll know this terminal block when you see it. It has 8 wires in, and 8 wires out. These wires left open will dissable the entire kill circuit, including the switches and wire harness, as it pertains to stopping the spark.
If you remove them, and get spark, the problem is in the harness or switches. these two wires need to be open to run, connected to kill.
I got me fingers crossed.
Also, look for a blown fuse in the fuse block. This block should be under the console by you helm. If this fuse is open, it won't provide that pulse we were talking about (just noticed this, looking at the manual's schematic).

Re: No Spark on 1991 Force 150.... Help

I am having the exact same problem with my boat, it's a 1991 Force 150 with a thunderbolt ignition and it is not firing on all five either. Did you find out what was wrong with your? I'm getting fire going to the switch box but not to the coils. If there is any thing you can share I would greatly appreciate it.
