Hi...after sitting a long time while I worked on the lower unit, the motor won't produce a spark. The coils seem to be OK? I'd some advice on what may be the problem/problems.

Did it have spark before you worked on the lower unit? How do you know the coils are ok? Have you had the flywheel off? Could be many things - bad coils, points, condensers, plugs, wires. Points may be dirty or improperly set. If you haven't had the flywheel off, I'd pull the flywheel and have a good look.

Hey, Help this guy if you can. He's a really good guy. Just bought my old 62 40 Hp Rude" He may be back with questions on her too. I am NOT a Mek-A-NEK. My B.I.L. did all the work on her back in the day when we had her running but she's been sitting for 3 years so who knows now!!!:noidea:

Just waiting to hear what it looks like under the flywheel. Lindy called this one for sure.

Well the first and easiest thing i would do is isolate the two black wires that come out of your magneto, sometimes they are against a wear spot and are grounding out or the kill switch isnt working right. And of course check your spark plug (i always just put a new one in for good measure) If you don't have spark after that you will need to pull your flywheel and make sure your points are gaped properly and arnt dirty or set up, then check your coils for visible damage and test with a simple ohm meter. FYI i tend to replace the entire ignition system when i pull the flywheel on any motor, the points, coils, and condensers are fairly inexpensive and it will give you a little more piece of mind with a brand new ignition system, a day stranded on the lake is hardly ever a good day :)

I also forgot to mention that sometimes rust will form under the flywheel especially if it has been sitting for a couple years, that will cause issues too

Thanks everybody.

Lindy46 and others: This motor was running prior to taking the lower unit off in order to replace water pump. I have the fly wheel off. The points look good and so do the coils. Tested coils with ohm meter and get about 4.5 reading. Spark plug wires have continuity.

I'm thinking I have a switch problem? This is an electric shift.

I did buy the ole '62 Evinrude from Woodonglass and I plan to put it on a flat bottom boat to run the area rivers. QUESTION: can one put a tiller on these larger Evinrude motors?

This motor must have a working generator on it.-------When in gear the shift magnet draws power all the time.-------Yes it can be converted to a tiller operation.-------------12 volts are not used to make the actual spark.----------The points must be absolutely clean for proper spark.
