I cant figure it out has eletric shift. The prop spins in same direction when it turns over wehter you put it in nutural or reverse. Is there a nuetral safty to only start in neutral and where the neutral safty switch located.

A Model # would be very helpful. The 85 has been made in Manual Shift, Electric Shift, Hydro-Electric Shift, and Hydro-Mechanical Shift models

The Hydro-Electric model, will shift to Forward when engine stops turning. It is supposed to shift to Neutral at Cranking Speeds. Is there Oil in the Gearcase?

The shift buttons have nothing to do with spark to the sparkplugs.-----Did this happen all of a sudden ?----How did it start / run for you last month or last year ?-------Could be the points or the anti-reversing spring too.

Its never ran since i baught it and is the a picture of this anti reversing spring not sure what that is. I think its in the points system i just dont know much about them. I ordered a service manual for that motor waiting on it in the mail.

I suggest you do a complete evaluation on this motor before spending any more coins.----The motor will always be in forward gear if it is not running.------If lower unit is good it will shift to neutral after ONE turn of the flywheel.

The service manual is mandatory if you expect to learn how the ignition system works. On the other hand, it shows obsolete troubleshooting methods. Fortunately, it is pretty simple if you understand things electrical. Otherwise, hang onto your wallet.

Ya i do a little bit as for the eletrical stuff. I only got 200 in the whole boat and trailor. So i dont mind dropong a thousand or two to get it going. I just feel like its somthing simple im over looking. Now the lower end i have no clue that with be going to the boat man unless i can get a good understanding of it. Its a cool old boat its a starcraft and i want to make it cool again and on the water.

Need a strong starter system to produce spark. Start with sandpaper on the battery cable ends. The battery should be fully charged, and may need to be load tested at an auto parts store. Motor must crank about 300 rpm which will sound fast.

With an adjustable tester, you can test each lead at a time with all plugs removed -- no compression, cranks faster. If good spark is measured with plugs removed (maybe 3/8"), I would suspect a wiring issue in the starter circuit, or a weak battery.

When you are at the auto parts store to test the battery and buy the spark tester, ask if they will lend out a compression tester. Check and record compression, cranking until needle stops if the analog type. Post results.

Nope ----This ignition system is fired using 12 volts from the battery.----Will fire when you slowly turn the flywheel with a socket and powerbar for testing !!!
