Need a strong starter system to produce spark. Start with sandpaper on the battery cable ends. The battery should be fully charged, and may need to be load tested at an auto parts store. Motor must crank about 300 rpm which will sound fast.
With an adjustable tester, you can test each lead at a time with all plugs removed -- no compression, cranks faster. If good spark is measured with plugs removed (maybe 3/8"), I would suspect a wiring issue in the starter circuit, or a weak battery.
When you are at the auto parts store to test the battery and buy the spark tester, ask if they will lend out a compression tester. Check and record compression, cranking until needle stops if the analog type. Post results.
