I have a '59 johnson 50hp V4, recently I did a tune up, cap, rotor, reset points, plugs, and new wires. I also recently rebuilt both carbs and the fuel pump. I had it running good in a barrel, took it out to the lake to tune the carbs in gear at WOT, the best I could get out of it was 1800 RPMs. I went through the carbs again found a stuck needle, I was checking the spark again and found there was no spark on the no.3 cylinder. I removed the cap and noticed that the number 3 tower was being hit by the rotor, the rotor wiggled alittle on the shaft but didn't seem enough to hit the cap. The old cap looked fine and had no wear grooves like my new one after a few hours. The other towers had regular electrical burns like normal. Is it possible I got a defective cap or rotor? The distributor shaft doesnt wiggle. One more thing, if I hold a wire from the magneto above the rotor should it have even the slightest spark? The old rotor jumped easily, thats why I changed it. It DOES have spark on the other cylinders. Lastly has anyone had problems with other brands of spark plugs? Old champion plugs have good blue spark, new Autolight plugs have weak orange spark.
