no spark with plugs in

have 1973 Johnson 135 .replaced bad stator and power pack have fire on all cylinders with plugs out ... install 1 plug without plug wire hooked to plug , just screwed in either bank and will only fire on 1 cyl. put all plugs in and will only fire on one cylinder . how can just screwing plug in stop fire ??????

Is the mtr spinning over fast enough ?? It has to spin 250-300 rpm for the ignition system to work.

yes spinning fast enough .. has new power pack and stator ... read some where could be trigger gap needs adjusting .. I got new plugs to try today thinking maybe shorted ??? im stumped

You're on the right track with the trigger gap. OMC used to make a tool for it but I can't find the #. Maybe somebody else will chime in.

You could also have a bad timer base.

Adjusted timing triggers . Have spark on all cylinders . Fired up for few seconds . Now has fire but won't start again . How does triggers stop fire with plugs in ??
