Hey Dave sounds like you found a jem in the rough! Kind of odd that both died, before you spend your hard earned money on parts you might not need check on the simple things first.
Have you made sure the wiring is correct to the ignition switch, check on the condition of the plug wires, lose wires, dry rotted wires, wire connections and so on.

It's a good place to start looking before you start spending.

you can't do this with the flywheel off, did you actually check the compression. i'd be concerned why it got hot enough to melt the coils. altough when they start to go bad the coils themselves get hot. go to the engine faq forum(top of this page boating forums) read awakening a sleeping outboard.
