No spark...

well we went to the lake one day; the boat fired right up, then died and would not restart. it had no spark. we traced the problem to the power pack; replaced it; and still have no spark. my step father says it may be the stator; do these things fail as fast as it did? any input appreciated, gonna be a hot weekend and will be even hotter without a boat.

Re: No spark...

What are we working on here?

Try unhooking the black/yellow wire to rule that out. Should be a connection on back of the motor near the pack. It's a kill wire. Also when this wire is unhooked check it for voltage on the key side with the key in all positions. There should be no voltage. If there is it may have killed another pack. Sometimes the key switch goes bad and shorts that wire sending voltage through it. If that wire is unhooked you will have to choke the motor to turn it off.

0.0 on the black/yellow in all posistions except start; my parents are sleeping in the room right above my garage bay. here is a pic of the stator, it is a little rough; but it should do the job, ive seen worse.

looking at the rust on it. it is in bad shape. any cracks on the coils can not make out in picture.

Re: No spark...

I took it off and found no cracks on the coils. I am about ready to throw this motor away and give my little brother a paddle.

Re: No spark...

It lives! i took it off as said before, wirebrushed the rust off, and put it back on. i hooked up a multimeter to see if anything was coming off the charging line, went to the front of the boat, was turning it over looking at the meter. i looked at the motor and saw a thick blue spark jumping nearly half an inch from the end of a dangling spark plug wire onto the block. yay me :D i also know it works because i went to put the wire on another coil and got a very nice zap

Good job, I would go over the inside of the flywheel with some fine sandpaper, and check every wire connection to make sure that its not intermitent and happens again on the water.
