Re: No spark

Remove the black/yellow from switch box and retest. Make sure you have spark plug wires pulled to test as engine could start and only way to kill it would be to choke it or try to reconnect wire(OUCH:eek:)

Re: No spark

There is not black and yellow wire. Maybe to better help.. I have a mercury 40hp 402.... I dont want to take it to a mechanic because he wants to charge me $50-$75 just to evaluate it.

Re: No spark

Check all the terminal strip screws to make sure they are not sticking thru and touching block or wire are under the strip mounting screws. Also make sure the mercury kill switch is disconnected also. (small black cylinder that attaches to orange terminal) Take a ohm meter with wires disconnected and test the stator and trigger.
Stator....setting-Rx1000.. between blue and ground..reading should be 5-6
Stator....setting-Rx1....... between red and ground.. reading should be 50-60
Trigger...setting-Rx1000.. between brown and white.. reading should be 8-10

Re: No spark

Ok we tested everything above everything came back reading good.. What else could it be we also checked the ignition and that reads good. What should I be getting from the yellow wires that are coming from the stator. I dont know what else it could be..

Re: No spark

I think my stator is buggered too. The engine is a Merc 50HP Brown band serial number 9421064 (1985 model).

I have measured the ohms from the Red to earth which is about 13 ohms but the blue to earth has hardly anything. Also when measure between the red and blue there is a tiny amount of resistance.

What do you reckon? Knackered stator?

Re: No spark

Fixed the problem.. It had something to do with the ignition.. The kill switch had power to it so the boat never wanted to start took it off and moved it to the right spot and it powered right on up...:D
