Re: No spark?

have you got a multi meter? did you actually test the coil?
test it by checking each winding green wire to black wire you should have around 500 ohms black wire to the plates you should have around 50 or less, no reading on either winding is a bad coil - i had two that would blink when tested and had no apparent cracks one sparked the other didnt so i took the flywheel off and looked again and checked again same thing it would blink the reading toook the coils off and blam!! plain as day the bottom of BOTH the coils were cracked trust me i fought with the points for hours before i caught this

Re: No spark?

I have used ohm meters to check out coils before and have had them check good and still didn't work. Got them on a coil load tester and showed up bad. If you got a good local dlr who has one and knows how to use it he can tell you if it's good or bad within 5 min.

That's where a coil tester would have told you if it was bad or good. You could have saved some money. There's an old saying, "Test, Don't Guess". The older guys on here, like me, will remember where that saying came from.

Re: No spark?

There's only a set of points, a coil, a condenser, a spark plug wire+connector and a spark plug. If the coil is good and mounted properly and you're sure the points are absolutely clean and gapped properly and wired up correctly, then the condenser is bad, or the spark plug wire is broken or not shoved all of the way into the coil, something is grounded or the connection to the spark plug is faulty or the spark plug itself is bad.
That's one reason I just replace all of that stuff when I get a motor of unknown heritage so I know that I don't have to mess with it again.

Re: No spark?

I generally try another condensor, before I replace a coil. If the insulation on a coil is in good shape, then it's extremely rare that they fail. I had it happen, but it's very rare. Condensors are far more likely to fail, than a coil. You also want to make sure the gap on the points are right. Another thing I notice that likes to fail on these, is the connections on each end of the spark plug lead. Often times when people change coils, they leave the old spark plug leads in and they just hook the coil up to the old connections. I all reality, you should trim off about 1/2" off of each end, if you plan on using your old spark plug leads with a new coil. A lot of times, the connector in the spark plug boot will loose contact and drive ya nuts. So, bottom line: Make sure all connections are clean and everything is set perfectly and it should give you plenty of fire.

my vote is replace it all.... your only looking at maybe another 15bux to do a spark plug point set and a plug wire youve got the fly wheel off anyway why mess with it??

Re: No spark?

i still stand by what i said before flywheel removal is a pain in the @$$ do the points and change the whole darn thing plug and plug wire too

how do you have it wired? points should have the condenser wire and the green wire from the coil on it and the black wire should ground out on one of the screws holding the coil on make sure the coil isnt rubbing on the flywheel at it spins and set youre points WITH A FEELER GUAGE to .020 no more no less also make sure you route the wires where they dont hang up on anything ESPECIALLY the flywheel

Re: No spark?

get a plug and a new plug wire too this will rule out all the possibilities
once you get the new points put em on and turn the crankshaft until the foot of the points line up with the dot or arrow on the cam on the crankshaft it should say "TOP" right next to the dot or arrow its easiest to do this with the spark plug out
theres two screws on the points one holds them down and the other adjusts the points open or closed youll need a set of feeler guages you can get these at any auto parts store for about 5 bux
with the foot of the point lined up with the arrow or dot and your .020" feeler guage in between the points open or close them with the adjusting screw until you feel a VERY SLIGHT drag on the feeler guage take your time or youll be back in there doing it again because this is where you get your spark before you tighten the flywheel up set it on the crank and snug down the nut then check for spark by rotating the flywheel quickly by hand if no spark check your points again got spark torque the flywheel to spec, put it back together, and give it a go with fresh fuel and oil mix in the tank
