No Spark!!!

I recently purchased a secondhand 4hp 1979 Evinrude Motor (49B36D - I think its a European model). When I bought the motor it wasn't working - but soon started after a good carb clean.

Today I decided to replace the HT leads (even though it was working fine) as one of them had been patched halfway down. Now, I am only getting spark at one of the plugs. Initially, I thought it must be a problem with the new lead, but am still getting a problem when I swapped back to the old lead. I have swapped the coils - and both are working - giving a good spark on the other lead. I have tried swapping the same condensors - with the same effect. I have cleaned the points in case I got some dirt in there. The points are the only part of the setup I've not swapped over and I'm now beginning to struggle!! Please tell me I'm missing something simple. All help and advice very much appreciated! Why did I not just leave the working dodgy setup well alone!

Re: No Spark!!!

Have just found a difference between the two sides. On the working side I have a resistance of 1 ohm across open points. On the non-working side the resistance is 500 ohms across open points. What does this mean?? I don't quite understand how the points work and don't know whether they need to make a ground through their bases. My only thought is that I sprayed some WD40 near the non-working set of points in order to loosen a stuck bolt. Could this have reduced these points ground, leading to the higher reading and no spark?

Re: No Spark!!!

I use a small artist brush and acetone to clean the points...small amounts of oil or grime will affect them...

Re: No Spark!!!

Many thanks for the advice. Now seem to be getting a spark on both cylinders - hurrah!!! Not quite sure what the problem was - but having taken apart, cleaned and put back together the offending points, it seems to be doing its job. Motor is not running right, but this may require another thread!!
