No Spark??

OK, I have the Sea King from an earlier post. After closer inspection, it looks as if all the ignition parts are new. New rotor, cap, points and a lot of new wiring. Everything appears to be OK, but I get no spark. Assuming the plug wires and plugs are OK, could the timing be off?
Could that make it so I have no spark? The engine has a magneto, and I am not sure how they work?

Thanks!

Re: No Spark??

Try disconnecting the engine wire from the side of the magneto, leaving the one to the points connected. Crank the motor over and re-check for spark. If spark occurs, then you have a grounded condition in the wiring harness and/or key switch. If not, then the mag needs troubleshooting.

Re: No Spark??

The timing being off shouldn't stop you getting a spark...it will just be at the wrong time! :)

A magneto works by whizzing a magnet past a "coil", wrapped round an iron core. This induces a low voltage current in one winding of the coil. When the contact breaker opens it shuts off this current, causing the magnetic field in the primary coil winding to collapse. As it does so it induces a much higher voltage in the secondary winding which is earthed through the spark plug....being a high voltage it can jump the gap to earth.

There's not much to go wrong, and old magnetos can keep working for decades (well, on old motorbikes they do). Usual reasons for not sparking are maladjusted point gaps, or especially dirty or pitted points (even a trace of oil on the points can mess things up).

Older coils did not produce the oomph of today's replacements though. If cleaning and adjusting the points and replacing the plugs doesn't help, check your high tension leads for any possibility of a leak to earth (cracks etc). Then mebbe look at replacing the coils.

Good luck. :D

Hi Dan M

On some of these older models, the little cam for the points is removable. If you put the cam in upside down, you will have no spark, no matter how many new components you have. The markings, set and tdc or whatever, must face upwards. Been there, done that too.
