NO TACH READOUT OR CHARGING

My boat sank last week. After running the engine in my driveway with a full can of Seafoam mixed in a gallon of fuel I took her on a sea trial yesterday. The engine, a 2000 Johnson 150 Oceanpro, ran quite well, but I am getting no tach readout from a new tach and new engine to remote control wiring harness. Also the voltage does not increase across the battery terminals when I rev the engine in my driveway. I am thinking both issues are related. I removed the flywheel and cleaned up the coils and magnets with sandpaper and isopropyl alcohol.

Does the tach get its signal directly from the stator or the rectifier? Any comments are appreciated.

Your motor likely has a 35A charging system with a water-cooled voltage regulator. First ohm out the grey wire and see if it is shorted to ground. Next disconnect the grey wire at the voltage regulator and start the motor on a flusher and connect a voltmeter set to read AC voltage to the grey wire on the voltage regulator and see if you get a signal. If you get an AC voltage, the tach signal is probably good.

You may find some helpful info in the CDI Electronics Troubleshooting Guide ..... http://www.cdielectronics.com/support/

There are some simple tests not requiring any special equipment on pages 5 to 8 and some more in depth testing later in the guide

You might find a DVA adapter for your multimeter will be required. Google will find a simple circuit which will enable you to make one

Update: I retraced all my rectifier wiring and apparently I had the output wire from the rectifier connected to a ground post on the engine block! Now it all works as it should. Thank you to those who responded.
