been working on alot of other stuff on my '76 25hp evinrude, making a list of parts to order. figured id go ahead and get a thermostat/gasket. i went ahead and popped off the thermostat housing to take a look and found no thermostat. this motor was my grandfathers for a while, he got it from a friend who was the local shadetree mechanic who continued to work on it while my grandpa had it. the shadetree mechanic was a old guy from alabama, like in his 80's, this was all about 15 years ago. he could almost always get a motor running , just not by doing things the proper way. i assume he is the one that took the thermostat out to "fix" a issue.

since its been out for so long im wondering if putting a thermostat in will effect the water pump as its also old.

Re: no thermostat?

If it is old one of the things you should be doing is replacing the water pump impeller!

Refitting the thermostat would be a good idea because without it the motor will run colder than it should.

Re: no thermostat?

im currently trying to encourage the lower unit to come off. of the 4 smaller bolts holding it on, 1 has been broken off since i got the motor, 2 come out fairly easy but 1 will budge slightly then bind. currently soaking everything in deep creep.

i do have a spare lower unit i might swap in, this one's skeg is ate up.

FYI this thing has lived almost all its life in saltwater. i will NEVER buy a used saltwater motor again. at least not unless someone took dang good care of it and it has no rust.
