I will post pics if need be, but I've seen other posts on here of other i6's with timing gauges in the flywheel. I have none. It's a 1970 1150 kiekhafer. I just want to make sure it is set right, but don't know how to gauge4-6 btdc as the carbs open and 21 atdc at wot with no marks or gauge to go by. Also will an inductive timing light work to check, or there a special one for two stroke outboards. Can't help would be greatly appreciated.

On a motor of that age, the top cowling support should have a timing mark stamped on it. There should be a timing decal on the flywheel. Do you see a punch mark on the flywheel? That would locate the position of the timing decal. If you turn the flywheel Until the cast mark on the distributor pully points to the punch mark, that is TDC. You might test it.

Russell, on the Merc forum, near the top is a "start new Thread" button....You cannot start a new thread from within a thread...

Ok I have lined up the marks on the flywheel and the dist pulley and it is #1 tdc and the rotor lines up with the 1 plug wire. The motor currently runs but I want to verify I'm not advancing the spark too much at wot. Can this timing mark decal still be purcased? If so will my auto inductive timing light work to set it or will I have to get a mercury one?

Ok I think I figured it out. My motor is missing the whole top cowl mount where the decal is supposed to be. I always thought the front plate where the switch box and rectifier mounts was pretty sloppy loose. It because I don't have the cowling that ties the front and back together. I need to run to the boat salvage and see if I can pick one up. I feel like an idiot but my motor was such a basket case when I got it how was I to know. I need to find someone that gas a tower of power that I can inspect for own reference so I know how mine is supposed to be.

Make sure the top cowling support has the timing mark on it. The newer ones will fit, but do not have the timing mark. The paper decal is supposed to be glued to the flywheel. Maybe you can pick up a flywheel with a decal.

I hope I can find one cheap enough. It looks like u can still buy them new, but they r over 100 $. Hoping to find a used one locally or at the salvage yard.
