When I was given my boat, I never thought about no title or bill of sale, (my first boat). Now I need a bill of sale they said. Does anyone know how to title a boat if you don't have bill of sale.
The old number is still on the boat. help??

Re: no title help

Well, you can make a bill of sale on your computer if you have a printer
with info about the sale price, boat hull number your address, the previous owner name and address.. then you sign and have them (or someone you know ) sign for them

then apply for a title ?

each state is differnent and depends on the year of the boat.

good luck

Re: no title help

In MS and in TN with a car you can visit your insurance agent and apply for a "title bond". It is basically a sworn affidavit of ownership. As long as no one will ever contest ownership you wont have any problem. This may work with your boat. Here it usually costs around $75. Hope this helps.

In PA they just use the boat's registration numbers to look up the previous owner and send them a letter offering them the ability to contest your ownership. If they don't hear anything in 30 days or something it's yours.

Re: no title help

oh, yeah, the guy who gave it to me, bought it with a trailer (which is what he wanted) and gave me the boat. Have no idea who he is now...too long ago to retriece phone #. I guess I will try the vin or whatever it is called and go from there. An aquaintance suggested just having someone fill out the bill of sale to me...hmmmm.

Re: no title help

Start by contacting your Sec of State. Maybe they have a helpline, you can ask questions over the phone. You need to deal with them sooner or later.

I bought my boat from the daughter of the previous owner. He had passed on and apparently never registered the boat from whomever he bought it from. The title was lost and that's where I stared from. Royal PITA.

If I ever buy another boat, it will have a clear and present title to transfer over to me. Lots of trouble and Michigan Sec of State gave me conflicting information.

Contact your SOS and go from there. It can be done.

Thanks, I hate to lose out on a free boat. At least I have the numbers on the boat from last registration in Indiana. Now if I could just get a free (or almost free)m trailer and same on a motor, I would be greatly blessed more than I already am.
