my post on the tread about pwc in the general boating fourm remimded me of an incedent i had with a power boat when i was fishing off a designated fishing dock. where the dock was is clearly marked as a no wake zone. this one boat came threw just off a plane where you make the biggest wake. I yell out to him "NO WAKE ZONE PLEASE SLOW DOWN" as the dock is bouncing around violently a little kid on the dock almost falls down. His response was to simply flip me the bird and go on like he never heard me. about 10 mins later he comes threw again in the same fashion this time running over my fishing line cutting it in his prop. this time a say nothing reel my line in and produce to attach the largest lure i had in my tackle box and like clock work about 10 mins later he is comming threw again. i yell out at him "OBEY THE RULES OR BOAT SOMEWHERE ELSE" he gives me the finger again. so i casted my lure directly at his boat it bounced off his windshild he dident come back. Not that my actions where proper but wtf is with some people these days?

Re: no wake zones

Our neighbor and his dad bought a boat. His Dad is in his 70's but George wanted him to learn the boat so he let him drive.

As they were headed out the canal sometime mid-afternoon., George told his Dad "slow down, this is a no wake zone." He Dad replied, " what the heck are people doing sleeping this time of day?" LMAO

Re: no wake zones

He'll learn his lesson when someone gets hurt from his wake. That happened a couple of seasons back.

Where I do my seasonal boating at, the marina/docks are back in a cove protected from the wave action of the lake. They have a handycap dock for loading/unloading people with diabilities in this area since it rarely has any wake.

One particular day Mr Idiot did the same thing with his boat. He couldn't idle it down but wasn't up on plane. He was pushing a nice big wall of water. I was in my cabin of my boat and was thrown out of my bunk due to his wake. I rushed out of my cabin to get his registration numbers. Then I watched as his wake hit the pontoon boat loading up a special needs child in a wheel chair. The two assistants that were helping got throwed into the water. Lucky the kid didn't go in with his custom wheel chair. However, the assistants had some equipment with them that was needed for the child that got dumped in the water also. They had to load the kid back up in the ambulance since his life support equipment got damaged. I used the vhf to report what happened to the watercraft officer. He was there within a few minuets and took over. Several of us dock rats told him what happened and he then arrested Mr. Idiot.

Long story shortened (I hope). Mr. Idiot got the max fine and had to pay $25,000 for replacement of the equipment. From then on,,,Mr. Idiot had to sell his boat to help pay for is stupidity. Hopefully if he gets another boat, he will know that he is responsible for his wake.

I bet Mr Idiot hates boating now for his own ignorance.........SS

Re: no wake zones

Be suprised how many boneheads out there boating dont even know what no wake means!Thats a part of why my dad quit fishing lake saint clair. We always driffed fish for walleyes. You would not believe the idiots! They come so close to you!Was out there oneday fishing in my dads boat with a friend. This boat pulling a skier came so close he through water in my boat!Well i cranked up my line instructed my friend to do the same.Fired it up and headed to them. They were changing skiers.I pulled up and said hey dumb s--t do you know for your skiers safety and mine you are supposed to stay 100 ft away from a fishing boat?He proceeded to bad mouth me then said there isnt 100 ft here.It was a channel called the sneigh.I said then take it out in the lake where its wide open! Told him never mind bud!I have your mc numbers the proper authorities will educate you!He had a whole different tune then!I am not against anyone doing their thing! Im not a skier never have never will! But keep it away from fishermen.Sometimes hard enough keeping the boat straight with wind and such. Then you got to deal with all their nonsense.I wont even start on the wave runners! They are the most discourdious boneheads i have seen! Think they own the water and the rules are for everyone but them.

Re: no wake zones

What do fishermen consider the "no wake" area around their boat? There's a section of the river here a couple of miles long, 200-300 feet wide, where their are usually around 4 to 6 skiers, kneeboarders, tubers, etc. It always cracks me up when somebody comes out and decides they need to fish right in the middle of it and everybody needs to stop for them. This is southern Louisiana, must be a million places to fish within 5 miles. Seems they get extremely upset if their boat rocks at all. If I'm out fishing I expect my boat to rock in the waves some!

Got to admit it is extremely amusing to watch them all holler and scream at each other!

Re: no wake zones

45Auto,

Posted "no wake" means no wake. Signs mean things.

I agree that fishermen get a little testy when they decide to anchor in a known throughway. They, are then, infringing on your ability to go past no wake speeds.

Follow the signs, no wake means no wake. For you fishermen. If you anchor, or set up, in a throughway, expect to get rocked.

If you want to be an idiot on the waterways, expect to get cited. It's no different than the highway.

Re: no wake zones

We don't take no wake zones lightly around here. The wake from a boat can destroy property as well as threaten the safety of others. When you live on the water and your kids swim off your dock, you fish from your dock and maintenance/repair or replacement of a bulkhead dosen't come cheap, you seem to get pretty darn serious about boaters making a wake or driving recklessly. The canals are our streets, there are reduced speeds in all populated neighborhoods and should be respected.

Re: no wake zones

I agree 100% with the marked "No wake" zones. My earlier post was directed more towards Post #6 from Fish N Geer about the skiers coming close to his boat. I really hope that if they were skiing in a "No Wake" zone something was done about it! My impression was that he was fishing and some skiiers came close to his boat.

Just wondering what people expect if they're anchored and fishing in the middle of a busy throughway that isn't a "no wake" zone. Seems really selfish to me when you expect everyone else to stop what they were doing before you arrived (tubing, skiing, etc) so your boat doesn't rock.

Re: no wake zones

if i am fishing in a throughway out of a boat i dont expect people to slow down for me i might get a bit annoyed if they were traveling just off a plane making the largest wake there boat could make, getting rocked is part of the price to pay in fishing a throughway i just wish them to be concous of my fishing and try to keep there distance as much as possible. although it can take you by surprise if you not paying attention i remember one time comming withing inches of taking a bath when having a boat pass me in a throughway. in the orrigional post the 2 things that pissed me off the most is there where children one of them almost got hurt from his actions and 2 it was a posted no wake zone where you should not have to deal with wakes. and 3 the dumb bass was travling close enough to us to acualy run over my fishing line. if i were to see a young child fishing in a boat in a threw way i would slow down to no wake speed to pass adults probably not. however i would be fishing in a more sheltered/protected area with children just my .02

Re: no wake zones

One thing that annoys me are people who put up their OWN No Wake Zone signs just becasue they chose to build a dock on a busy section of water that has no official No Wake designation. If I am 200ft off shore I can go as fast as I darn well please and your No Wake Zone sign stuck on the end of your 100ft dock is not going to faze me one little bit. If you can afford that dock, and that 25ft Donzi, and you don't want your boat rocked, get a sling for your boat and hang it in the air like your neighbors do.

Re: no wake zones

Most of our boating is on a small inland lake about 1.25 mile diameter. It's very shallow, with the deepest hole only 15'. My wife's family has had the cottage there for over 60 years. It's always been a sports lake, *never a fishing lake (unless you really like 6" bullheads).

It's also specified that all traffic must generally move in a counterclockwise direction around the lake. There's an imaginary band from 200' offshore to about 500' offshore where almost all boat traffic is -- common usage, not by regulation. A couple residents put in a ski course in the middle. It's been years since I've been able to ski, but I love watching them (with fond memories of what I used to be able to do). There's also a few small sailboats, people anchoring and swimming, etc in the middle.

In the past 4 - 5 years, some folks moved in across the lake that don't like any motor noise or waves. The Lake Owners' Association has rebuffed their efforts to have the lake classified as no-wake between 6 pm and 11 am. I don't understand why they chose to buy a place on this kind of lake instead of one that already has those kind of restrictions.

It really bothers me these folks have started "fishing" right in the traffic pattern most evenings and weekends. I don't want to bother them, but when they intentionally try to impede traffic, it's easy to get PO'd.

I think everyone cheered the county sheriff when he threatened them that if they anchored to fish right in front of the ski course, he'd ticket them. Can't wait for that to happen!
