No warm up lever

I recently put a 84 115 johnson on the project boat I have been working on that had the side control box with the warm up lever on it. I put it on a center console with a top mount control but no warm up lever. I took the boat out this weekend and it seemed like I was going to wear the starter out before I ever got it off the trailer. I guess my question is are motors set up different for top controls like idles higher or something?

Try wiggling the shifter with it in neutral and grab it at the bottom and pull to the left at the same time. Mine pulls left and then it is in neutral and you can rev up the engine.

Try grabbing the lever at the bottom with left hand and pulling left while wiggling shifter in neutral with other hand. Mine slides left putting motor in neutral and allowing you to rev up the engine.
