This is the first motor that has stumped me in a year. Let me give u a little history of this motor.

2001 Johnson optical ignition 115

Repaired items :
Water pump (Needed it)
Reg (Was on fire)
Fuel System including Vapor Sep

Problems:

will not go over 3000 RPM
No Warning system

I have Good spark on all cyls. Ran the motor with VRO2 disconnected (no change with a tank mixed 50:1 ). It seem that the SLOW system is active but can't tell due to the waring system not working. disconnected both temp sensors. Checked the quickstart. Seems like the blocking Diode is not functioning. I am going to replace the Diode once I find it.

so what do you guys think

What make and number sparkplugs are you using and what gap?

Has the flywheel been removed and the stator visually inspected for melted insulation? This should be done in addition to resistance checks.

Since the rectifier caught fire, I would assume that you had wing nuts on the battery terminals. Is that correct?

Re: No warning system and loss of power

All the batt terms are tight... The plug gap have been checked (.030)..It could be going into slow mode but that should only allow me to go to 2500rpm. This is not my first redeo... I own a marine service business. Of the 1000s of motors I have fixed this is the first that has stumped me. I was just hoping that someone out there has had this problem and has a resolve to this issue.

Remember that the blocking diode is shorted (current flows in both directions.

I will look at the stator but I have good spark on cyls and the fuel system is clean. Timing is correct on all cyls.

Thanks for the quick reply...
let me know if you have any futher suggestions

Re: No warning system and loss of power

met128,

please answer my first question.

"What make and number sparkplugs are you using and what gap?"

If you are using NGK's or another brand or Champions without a Q as the first letter, that may be your problem.

Was the electric eye (OIS) ever replaced or cleaned after the regulator fire? Also closely inspect the plastic timing wheel for a cracked area between the timing windows and the sync window.

Are you sure it is an ignition problem (checked with a timing lite on each plug wire) or could it be a fuel or carb problem?

Re: No warning system and loss of power

Timing is good 1 plug is TDC when running, 2 plug on 2 when running as well as 3 and 4 with a timing light.

Plugs .030 gap as per spec oem plugs QL77JC4

Just tested the boat on the water... Not a fuel problem (sprayed fuel into the carbs at full Throttle, no increase in RPM)

PRV 200+ on Stator
PRV 200+ on all Power pack Wires
Compression 120+ on all Cyl
No SLOW system Lights
No cracks on timing wheel
OIS eye is clean
All Carbs Clean with no restrictions
Vapor Sep cleaned and inspected
New Primer ball (Needed one)
Tested plug Wires, 500+ ohms on all of them

If anyone has seen this issue please respond. I have worked on 1000s of OB's but this is the first one to ge me stumped....
