I replaced my horn in the remote becasue testing showed it wasn't working. Now the replacement when grounded at the head does sound but when turning the key on it doesn't. Should I be worried or will it work just fine in an overheat condition?

Depends, year of motor/controls, how you want it to work.

1990 johnson j60elesm, controls i can't say how old or if they originally came with the motor.Stanard control box with fast idle lever and throttle lever.

So longs as the thing goes off if the motor ever overheats that's all I want and the VRO is disconnected and am running from premix.

the factory replacement horn assembly has a separate ground wire that has to be hooked up to make the "self test" beep work when the key is turned on. If you purchased an aftermarket or other brand of horn, then they do not have self-test

I'll check later if there is a separate grd wire, can't tell right now, but as long as it beeps when grounded at the head does that mean that it will function in an overheat senario??

Yes, that's the standard way to test the overheat alarm circuit.

I think you have something wired wrong. Are you going to run your mtr with the key off as that is the only time it will sound ??
