I have a 1979 mercury 80hp outboard Ser# 5378919.... I started the motor the other day with the hose hooked up but there was no water coming out when it started....What could be wrong...It's the fist boat i have owned... Also it acts like its not getting any gas had to use some starting fluid... When I got it ready for the winter mths I put the stuff in the tanks but didn't run it through the lines... Thanks for any help...

First NEVER USE STARTING FUILD IN A 2 STROKE its a good way to ruin a motor real quick. Your motor is starving for fuel (running lean) if you have to use starting fluid to start it. Rebluild you carbs with a new carb kit and let the carbs sit in yamaha carb dip for at least a day to clean all the passages and jest out. The days of sparying them carb with carb cleaner or now over with the e85 in our gas. I would take it down to the water and run it the if no water comes out the tell tail then install a complete new water pump. I have had this problem with the bunny ears in the past.

Older mercs take a while for the water to start flowing. This freaked me out the first time too. If you still have no water after 2 minutes then shut it down and check the impellar and t-stats.

There are no thermostats on that motor. Hook up the flusher device and crank up the hose to near full. Choke the daylights out of the motor, cold start lever all the way up. Crank her until she starts. If the motor is pumping, you will see water sucked into the intakes and it will emerge out of the prop and gratings above the antiventilation plate. The telltales clog easily.
