No water flow to engine

I have an 83 Regal with the Stringer 800. When I put muffs on it I get no water to the engine. I do see a stream of water coming from the inside of the right pivot arm, going into a hole that I presume(?) leads to the ball gears. So I know I have water that far. What would be keeping it from getting to the engine? I pulled the hose going to the thermostat housing and nothing is coming out.

Thanks

Are you doing this with the engine running? If you aren't, don't expect to get much if any water passed an impellor that is not spinning.

No, the engine was not running but I thought that I would get something out the hose. I have to pull the engine anyway so I can take a closer look then.

Thanks for the help.

Why don't yu just run the engine or is the engine not in a running state?

Also, for stringer drives, you can buy the trunion flush out fitting that bypasses the impeller. It is basically between the impeller and the engine. The impeller still gets lubricated by the water on its backside even though it is not pumping.

The garden hose should push water past the impeller no problem.
And yours is doing just that. That spray hole for the ball gears is past the impeller.

I always turn the hose on and wait a couple minutes.... and water will start to run out the prop.

I suspect something is blocking the hose or fitting on the intermediate hsg. try running a coat hanger back through the fitting atop the intermediate.

You can also take the pivot covers off the sides of the trunnion caps and see if it's all full of mud in there. Be careful with the bolts though.

It's in the process of throwing a rod so I don't want to run it. I'm getting ready to swap it out.

I saw one of those looking at the forum yesterday - definitely the way to go.

I'll have the engine out soon and I'll take a closer look. I haven't worked on one of these before - I have a manual but it's not telling me everything.

Thanks for all the help.
