i have no water at the thermostat when i remove the hose coming from outdrive. with muffs on i get great water flow but in the water it won't pump. i have a new impeller installed, checked hose from outdrive to transom and also checked the power steering cooler. everything is ok. when i back feed the hose from the motor to out drive i get water flowing out the pickup holes in the lower unit. should this happen?? i thought that you could not back feed pst the impellers..
any sugjestions would be greatly helpfull.......

sounds like a leak on the intake side of the outdrive water pump or a bad impeller or housing. Try completely rebuilding the outdrive water pump, not just the impeller.

then something is leaking so it is pulling in air instead of water from the pick up holes

Part of the way I winterize my 1975 OMC is back feeding with antifreeze and it always come out down by the intake for my waterpump or at least from down there somewere. Also just this summer I had a 1 year old impeller go bad. The brass insert would spin freely inside the rubber impeller, maybe this happened to you. I'm not sure if this would cause your problem but did you use nonhardening gasket sealer in the proper places on the new pump?

ron, going to remove new pump assy today and have another look inside. no i noticed on the old one that the stainless insert was "caulked or bedded" in to the housing. should this be done to the new one? also this is a 5.0 upgrade to a 5.7 also..

To rdemay; I noticed in your last post you mentioned an upgrade from 5.0 to 5.7. Why did you upgrade and what was the final result? ( I'm considering the same) Thanks in advance.

well i lost 3 cyl on 5.0 so when we went looking for a new motor i went with the 5.7 for more hp. think we went up 90 hp. motor came from jaspers down south somewhere and with a 24 month warantee. best deal out there. now if i can just cure the cooling problem i will be back on the water..

How was the new housing bad?

It is possible that the wrong one was installed. The KING COBRA outdrive uses a similar looking housing, but it is made to rotated in the opposite direction because of the different outdrive gear system.

well after taking it on and off a few times trying to find out what was wrong,,,we dicoverd tat where the hose that goes donw in the out drive connects, there was a crack..was big enough to stop the suction but small enough not to see with out really looking.. was a bad mold we guess and west marine gave us a new one and all is great....going out for tuna tomarrow...
