How long should it take to get water out of the tell tale?
I had muffs on the engin yesterday and no water from tell tale . I did not want to run to long to wait for it.
I did blow out the tube so it is clear. If the impeller is bad how big of job is it?
Thanks,
Lee

Sounds like it needs an impeller. Drop the lower unit. The water pump sits on top of the lower unit and is driven by the drive shaft. A service manual is not necessary but if you've not done this before, I advise you to get one.

You might want to check behind the threaded fitting at the engine too. That's where mine clogged up last time. You can double-check by dropping the LU and running some water straight up the tube from the hose. It should come out the tell-tale. Don't turn the pressure up too high though :)

On my 81 25hp I tried using the muffs and it did not work. I ended up smoking my impeller because of this. Do yourself a favor and put it into a barell of some sort and make sure the water level is up higher than the impeller.

I was thinking about doing this but ran out of time. I am going to do that this weekend, thanks.

mud dobbers will make a nest in the line, here in mi I carry or keep a thin wire in the boat to run up the pee hole, they have plugged mine some times every week, Just started a 15 Eveinrude that they got to last fall and when I went to start it had a plugged pee hole tube, use a thin wire so you can poke a hole in the nest, if you use a thick wire it can push a wad up the line further, best way to tell if it is bugs take the line loose from the head area and try and blow thru it, if its plugged leave it loose and run the wire all the way thru it with the tube loose from the motor head so you wont push the block into the elbow where you can't get it out
thought my tractor had a bad gasket on the top of the transmission but no Mud dobbers had the vent hole plugged

To test the clogged tell-tale hose disconnect if from the motor and start the motor with ears on. If water comes out of the hole where the hose was connected you know you're getting water and you've got a clogged tell-tale. While you've got the hose disconnected blow through it and that's a great test as well. Mine gets clogged with salt residue every now and then.

It could be the impeller and other things others have suggested but I'd check the obvious (and the easy) before dropping the lower unit.

I put it in a Garbage can of water and it sprayed right away.
Must be it wasnt getting the right flow from the muffs.
THanks,
