Men, I have a 1984 15 hp evinrude that sat for a few years. owner insists it ran fine till he stopped using it. How long do I need to run it to determine if water circulates properyl? Iv ran it for a minute at a time and never see any water out of the pee hole. I took lower unit off and impeller looks fine and water tube was properyy seated in gromit. I have purchased a new impeller but need to know if im not warming up the engine enought o open the stat b 4 i rip it apart again. Ive been reading about the thermostat on posts as well. Any input will be a help ty

I'm not familiar with your make outboard. Is it possible dirt dobbers made a nest in there somewhere?

Ive pushed wire almost clean through the pee hole down into the water tube. I just need to verify if this model spits or if it indeed comes out througe the prop hub> I dont want to waste my time

That is called the telltale jet. It lets you know if your waterpump is working. It should start after a few seconds on running. If not, shut it down to prevent overheating. A good check is to pull the hose loose from the port and connect a pressure gauge, like a brake bleed pump. It should show a change in pressure when trying to start. Do not let the motor start, pull the spark plug wire. If there is no change, the water impeller has probably lost its capability to move water. You are only looking for a build up of pressure. If it is an older engine, it is a good time to get a new one.

The fitting at the engine end of the tell-tale hose has a very narrow ID and is at a 90 degree angle. They tend to clog at that point. Best bet is to remove it and clean it out with compressed air, but you msy be able to force air through the hose and clear it. You will never get wire or monofilament to navigate that 90 degree turn.

Mr. LeeRoy Wisner has some suggestions in his articles:

Definitely check the tube or rubber hose, some times small debris gets sucked into the loop especially if you run aground or the engine hits dirt. Disconnect the hose and try blowing through it...Or if it grosses you out, get someone else to blow through it :)

Another question. The person I got this motor from was NOT mechanically inclined. Im sure it was never fogged or winterized. If there was any water left inside and it froze Will it have cracked the motor or are there freeze out plugs?

How about checking to see if the motor overheats? Run it for a few minutes. If the block around the head is too hot to touch, it's overheating. Most OB's run ~ 140to 150? F. The tell tale isn't all that important!
