I have seen these on some posts, but my fuel line does not have one. Only an in-line filter that looks like a small clear tube with a screen inside. Would it be smart to put one in while I'm rebuilding the motor. Is is dangerous for the motor to run without one?

Absolutly put one in. Boats have a very bad habit of getting water in the fuel. Suppose it could be because they are always in the water???? <br /><br />What kind of engine and drive do you have?

If that clear filter you now have is between the fuel pump and the carb, it is dangerous. Because someone cut the line and put a lawnmower filter in the steel line. If that is the case, you need a NEW fuel line from the pump to the carb.<br />The waterseperator/fuel filter should be installed between the fuel tank and the fuel pump on the engine (on the suction side of the fuel pump).

Don, from the pump to the carb, there is only a copper line. The little filter is on the rubber line from the tank to the pump. Could you tell me what the clear line from the pump to the bottom of the air filter is for.

That line should never have fuel in it. If it does, it means the fuel pump is bad and the fuel is leaking past the pump diaphram. When this happens it pumps the fuel to the carb instead of dumping the fuel in the bilge as an automotive fuel pump would.

Do it...Walmart has them for $26+t, and Filters are $6. You're probably going to need fittings though, and a new copper line from the filter to the pump. And that filter does not belong in the engine bay of an I/O. And that rubber line had better be CG approved hose. A 3/8 rubber fuel line will be about 1 inch in diameter.

if you go with an all metal filter canister or the racor type with a metal bowl the filter is in compliance in the engine box. that glass one is not.<br />the 6 dollar seachoice filters tend to rust away rapidly.<br /> racor makes a filter element that is compatable with most filter heads or you can use the 90 GPH 10 micron setup from yamaha. its 45 dollars for the kit and elements are about 14 each.<br /> should be against the law to have a boat without a water seperator.

Thanks Rodbolt, I'm trying not to take the cheap way out on any of this project, so I will look at the setup that you mentioned.
