I recently aquired a 1987 Celebrity Calais, Cuddy.

I can not see any wires hanging etc for the alternator..
Can anyone help me with wiring it up...?

Does the + go directly to the batterie?

What is you power package? engine and drive. There is a "One wire alternator" The heavy gage wire goes from the alternator to the same post on the starter that you attach the battery to.

Re: No wires for Alternator?

I have about 5,000 dollars worth of receipts for the motor...and they say it is a 3.8 4 cyl...

The alternator is not a marine(my friend is bringing me one to remedy that).

As i stated..there are no wires anywhere that I can see that attach to the alternator. When i brought the boat home...I put a toaster or tester if you will on one of the batteries and it is dead.

The motor starts like a charm, but I need to get the charging system figured out.
(the wiring is all messed up,but i am sorting through that...LOL)

:)

There is no such thing as a 3.8 4 cyl. There is a Mercruiser 3.7 4 cylinder, but it normally doesn't have an alternater unless converted, or there is a 3.8 OMC V6.

In this forum, we do not need to know what type boat you have, we need to know the following to answer your questions with any kind of specific information.

1. Engine year, make, type, model, and serial number if possible.

2. Type and model of outdrive, Merc, Volvo, OMC, etc.

All I can find so far for info:Model-MCM 180
Displacement-224 cid

Serial Number-B528799

As for the outdrive, might be a mercury Bravo ?

Any info would be great...(wiring diagrams etc)

I hooked up the battery and the wires, the starter wire from the batt got extremely hot ?

That is what you should have stated to start with, model numbers work better than just engine size. It's a 3.7L 4 cylinder (aka 470 type engine)

Not hardly, they didn't exist in 87. Not until 88. You have an Alpha I

Up in the Adults Only Sticky you can found links to the service manuals. Download #8, it has all the wiring diagrams for your engine in it.
The problem is, you have an aftermarket alternator, so without know exactly what alternator and how it's actually wired in, there isn't much we can tell you. The 470 style engines never had alternators on them. They all had the rotor/stator on the front pulley and the water cooled regulator/
