I have an 1985 evenrude vro 40. a few years ago while cruising the motor kept dying. it sound as if it was binding. so I poured oil into the gas tank and it ran great. recently, at around 3500 rpm the motor would starts to flucuate up and down. It would not hold steady at 5000 rpm and bog down. I have replaced plugs(oil stained) and wires. I also swapped ignition coils and carbs and fuel pump from another identical engine. no change. timing was checked to be close to 19 degrees. compression at 150psi top/ 90 psi lower. Did the ring/piston get fried? Am i missing something? What is this power pack I'm reading about? Any suggestion before tearing apart engine? thanks

Henry...with a compression difference like that you definity got some problems. The give away is when you said you poured oil into the gas and the engine ran better. The VRO on your engine could have stopped pumping the oil into the gas. If the VRO is original, there weren't any alarms for oil flow. You probably fried the #2 cylinder. I would not run the engine any more until you find out what the cylinders look like. You can do this by pulling the head off and taking a look. The good news (if there is any) is that you still have compression on the cylinder. Keep us posted on what ya' find. Good Luck.

Re: no wot power

thanks for the advice. But I am pissed because I might have gone through all that stress and work only to find it was a intermittant defective primer bulb releasing gas back into the tank. And the fuel line and bulb were brand new(wal-mart). How did I find it? My problem, during flushing or idling, the engine ran fine. No top speed or power over 3500rpm. Surges over choppy water. One morning it wouldn't idle at all. I concluded it must have been something I did the previous night. I back-tracked all adjustments and remember I disconnected the fuel hose for inspection(remember it was brand new). Bulb got hard after a few pumps but less than thirty sec went soft again. So I cut the outlet valve off, pumped, very little gas. So I put installed the back up fuel line assy and pumped it. Now she is up and running as good as ever.
Lesson to be learn. Don't take for granted because it's new doesn't mean it can't go wrong. I wasted a lot of fishing time. :p :p
P.S. Vro probably not working one hundred percent because oil level barely goes down. So I been adding oil to tank to be on the safe side. Probably take your advice and tear down engine to see what the damages are. caphank says thank everybody
