My wife and I moved from our house where we could park the boat in the driveway and nobody cared, to our new house where you get a letter from the homeowner's association if you do the same. So...we looked into storage options, and deciding that we couldn't afford the $100 per month for storage, we were offered a [free] storage option, on her friend's farm, in a field, about 5 minutes from a lake. Sounds good so far, right?

Well...this past weekend was the first opportunity we had to take the boat out. I brought it home to clean her up before the outing. I was attacked by wasps when I took the cover off. No big deal, I got rid of their nests and moved on. Cleaned up the outside of the boat, and when I got inside I moved a seat cushion and found a massive termite colony. Had to be thousands of them. Gag. I used raid on them and vacuumed them up. I dismantled one of the back seats because that's where they were eating. I think [hope] that problem is solved.

Then...I'm down on my knees vacuuming termites when I look up and meet eyes with a frog just before he jumps at me. Now, I have no problem with frogs generally, but I don't like to be surprised. And he surprised me. And, he got away. Still haven't found him.

So...I finally get the boat clean, it starts on the 2nd try, and I suggest to my wife we go out to the lake for an hour or so. Surprisingly she says yes, although she knows there are amphibians aboard. So we go to the lake, she's sitting with our daughter enjoying the breeze when she suddenly stands up and moves briskly from her seat. "Frog" she utters, pointing with a shaking finger. I check, hoping to see my friend from before, but instead I see a bright green tree frog, trying to hide.

That's all of the animals I've found so far. We're taking it out again next weekend for Father's Day, so I'll update you if I find a zebra or something.

Finally, my question...does anyone know of a good way to keep the critters out? I have a cover on the boat obviously, but of course these guys are small enough to get in somehow. The spot where the boat had been sitting for the last 3 months was very overgrown, and now it is mowed so I'm hoping that helps. Something's gotta give...I am not going to fight livestock every weekend.

Sorry for the long post. I needed to vent.

Put a cover on and remove all food and liquids from the boat, THIS includes sun screen, tanning oil, water, ANYTHING. Also remove all life jackets and towels from the boat, I know it is a pain but you don't want a cozy boat. Finally spray all wood surfaces in your boat with a bug spray (the type you would spray on a deck to prevent and kill).

Don't forget to put everything back in when you go boating. BTW this also takes care of your mildew problem (you will have it soon.)

To be honest, if I was you, I will try and cut somewhere on your budget to fork out $100 for storage ... at the end it is not worth all the troubles ...

One repellent I have been finding has to do with using peppermint oil. I am now looking for an emulsifier to bond the oil with water. So far soap looks good. By the way, this started out by looking for a squirrel repellent.

A few loose mothballs (the naptha kind) will usually keep all forms of life out.

When you take the cover off it will take a few minutes for most of the fragrance to blow away and what is left gives the boat a sort of "clean" perfume. Put the mothballs in a sealed jar for future reuse.

I've use dryer sheets and they seem to work well at keeping critters at bay. Just toss a few in closed up areas and around the boat in general. The only thing it doesn't seem to work on is Wasps. They will nest no matter what. But never had them in the closed up areas where the sheets are(Under seats, helm, Etc.). Mostly on the outer perimeter of the boat. But I never see any spiders, ants, frogs, cats, dogs, birds, elephants, zebras or whatever when I pull the cover off... And it smells good too..... :)

Thanks Ripfence. The only other I saw besides soap was egg. I think the egg would be used in foods that use oil.

Well, if you spray it on the top on a hot day it will make a very tasty treat!
