i have a 1995 230 dancer with an alpha gen2 5.0 engine . i purchased the boat over the winter and i took it out for the first time over the weekend. i noticed around 3500 rpm it has a high pitch noise from the rear of the boat? it only makes the noise in gear under load? i have checked the lower unit oil for any metal...none. i checked the gimbal bearing...very smooth. it does not mater if you are turning ,trim up ar down the the high pitch noise or whistle is there? i have a 4 blade alum prop not a ss. i have been told by other people that it may be a harmonics? has any one else had this problem

As SBN said, welcome.<br /><br />I had a 5.7 Alpha, same year model, that whined a lot through the boat at higher RPM. I owned the boat since new, and it always did it. It did not come on all of a sudden, it kinda grew as RPM went up, but there were some points where it was more pronounced than others for sure. I assumed that it was just the harmonics traveling all of the way through the hull. Never changed a bit and we ran that boat at least 700 hours before I had to have the drive done. It was killed by a bad bellows. Sound was exactly the same after the drive was redone. I have heard it on other boats as well.

Re: noise?? dancer

For some reason some Alpha drives just whine. I have taken them apart, checked and rechecked, and everything is exactly by the book.<br />I had an old GlasPly that had an Alpha I on it. It whined. I hit a log and broke the pinion gear in the upper. Replaced all the gears and bearings Upper and Lower. Whine never changed.<br />Near as I can tell it has something to do with the machining of the the housing. Even our Mercruiser techs shrug there shoulders and say "Some do and some don't"<br />If the gear lube is ok,and that is the way the previous owner was running it with no problems, I would say you are fine. But the only way of knowing for sure is to do a complete tear down and inspection. If all is ok, back lash, preloads, set to special tools, then that is all you can do. If it whines, it whines.
