noise from lower unit

i moved the throotle to reverse and the lower unit starts making a funny noise like the prop was not spinning just the shaft it sits on. So i went to forward same thing; i took my boat out of the water killed it and placed it in forward tried to spin the prop would not spin. did this in reverse moved a little then engaged and did not move. any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Heya , ..I think we will need to know more about what kind of noise you heard...try to describe it..schreeching , whirring ,clicking, knocking, sounding rotational or not...post back and let us know. Welcome to iboats.

Might be a good idea to tell us what kind of drive it is.. outbard or I/O,... manufacturer,model , and HP.

it is on a omc cobra 86 model i/o the noice was like a thudding like when one object is moving and the other object is sitting still i believe it is a 165 hp
