noise from outdrive

Have an 87 Alpha one. When first engaging either forward or reverse there is a tapping/clanking noise coming from the drive, only last a few seconds. As I apply throttle it goes away. I looked over the drive. When I grab the prop and tug on it there's about an 1/8 of an inch of play in the prop shaft forward and back. Not side to side. Is that normal or a sign of something amiss which would cause that sound I'm hearing? Worn gears? Fluid level is full.

How are you shifting? You should be putting it in gear quickly not slowly.
If that is not the problem then your lower shift cable is probably bad.

I was kind of easing it in gear. I'll do it with some more authority next time.:D Thank you. We'll see how it goes.

Easing in to gear = damage to shift dogs every time.

You want it in or out nothing in between.
