noise from top of 40 hp Mariner

Hope someone can help. My son and wife had my bass boat out on the lake. They where crusing across at about 3/4 throttle. Wife said engine made a pop sound and died. I got boat home pulled cover the only thing I can see is a liitle metalic dust around flywheel. I spun over the engine and it sounded like the noise is coming from the rope recoil on the manuel start. The engine will start and run. Compression is good. Has this tapping sound at the flywheel area, and will not idle down or it will die. Pulled rope and recoil, no problem there. I attemped to pull flywheel. It will not budge. Any advice?

If it's a 2cyl 40 HP sounds like a flywheel magnet came lose. Get the right puller to pull the flywheel the use of the wrong puller or hammering on the flywheel will cause the magnets to break
