noise in outdrive. is it the u-joints????

ok, i posted a thread a while back about getting my alpha one gen II sterndrive back on after replacing the gimbal bearing. I ended up buying a alignment tool and managed to get it on. when i started the motor the bearing noise was gone but there is a knocking noise coming from the outdrive when the trim is up. it fades out as you lower it and when it is in normal crusing position it sounds fine. it also makes noise when you turn the wheel to either side. there was no knock before i replaced the bearing and the u-joints felt tight when i had it out. do you think its the u-joints? any advice is appriciated!!

#1. DO NOT run the engine with the drive all the way UP!!! You run the risk of breaking something. (the U-joints CAN contact the inside of the gimbal housing)

#2. It's VERY hard (read:impossible) to diagnose a noise over the internet. (even if you record it and make an MP3 of it for people to listen to!!)

No one here can hear what you hear. We do not know what your "sound" sounds like!!

knocking/clunking noises that change in intensity or sound, when you turn or tilt the drive can sometimes be U-joints, gimbal bearing, or inputshaft bearing in the drive. It can also be more internal to the drive.

I would say start by removing the drive and closely inspect the gimbal bearing and U-joints.....

sorry if i made it sound like i wanted someone to decifer the sound. my hope was for someone to read the post that had replaced a gimbal bearing just to find out the drive was making a knocking noise. i was hoping it may be a somewhat common occurance and not just crazy bad luck on my part. that is why i didnt go into detail about the noise, i just called it a knock. thank you though for the heads up on running the motor with the drive up, i didnt know that was bad.
