I have a very clean 1986 16 foot Starcraft Super Sport aluminum open bow runabout with a 1990 60 HP Johnson. My lovely wife is very noise sensitive. I do not find the 60 objectionably loud but what would happen to the noise level at say 30 MPH cruising with an early 1990's Johnson 90? I have a chance to buy a 1993 Johnson 90 but only want it if it would be an improvement. (The boat is rated for 90 max but runs 39 MPH GPS with the 60) Thanks for any information!

Noise to noise sensitive people is less about loudness than it is about the "type" of noise. In reality, four stroke outboards and two stroke outboards at wide open throttle are not very far apart if you look at the noise levels (dB levvel). But because 4-strokes make a different sound (they sound less busy) than a 2-stroke you might say they are quieter when in fact they are very little quieter. So I suspect that the 90, because it is a four cylinder will be smoother and will make a "different" sound, she will likely prefer the 90 over the 60 although she may not actually "like" either one. Years ago my neighbors wife would not allow her husband to run their boat at more than half throttle because she didn't like the noise. I had a 19 ft Century with a 351 Ford at the time which was a much quieter rig than their outboard. Because the noise was different, she didn't have a clue when I was running faster than half throttle.

Both the 60 and the 90 are two stroke cycle engines. The 60 is a 3 cylinder and the 90 would be a four cylinder. Your answer makes a shift from four cycle to four cylinder so I'm not sure I understand it. I have owned four stroke outboards before (a 60 merc and a 140 Suzuki) and they idle extremely quietly but have to rev higher at a given speed and if you measure them with a db meter, they don't do much, if any better than a two stroke. I took a 1980 Evinrude off a similar Starcraft and replaced it with a Merc 60 four stroke and the four stroke was louder at cruise than the old 85.
