noise when free spinning prop

Hello All,

I need the community's assistance again.

I thought I was further from the reef but I found it with my prop and skeg. Tore my prop and skeg to pieces. I limped back to shore and changed out the prop with the spare. I took it out for a quick blast and it seemed to run fine.

The next morning, I gave the prop a spin by hand and noticed this sound that you will hear on the video. Did I bend my prop shaft?

I'm mechanically inclined and I do own the original service manual for this motor. It's a 1982 Evinrude 70 HP.

Help! I need direction on what to do.

do not run the engine till you pull the lower unit and check the barrings and carrier. I just did the same thing on a lake this weekend. I thought nothing of it when the lower unit slipped out of gear. It turned out i bent the carrier and spun all the barrings. big $ even doing it myself. Just food for
thought.

Look at the parts listings on BRP Evinrude website.

Re: noise when free spinning prop

I think I need to take a differnet route on this. Even if nothing is bent, the skeg makes me tear up everytime I look at it. I think I will have to bite the bullet and replace the whole lower end. I'm assuming finding a complete bolt on unit is the best way to go. Any suggestions...?

I have a line on a replacement lower end from a 1987 model. Someone here has a list of compatible models. It shows 1982 to 1988 will work for my model. E70TLCNB. What do I have to watch for? He doesn't know what length of shaft it came off. Will this matter in my case?

BTW, thanks for all your help in the past and help in the future. This site is the best!

sounds like the blades on the prop are hitting something on the skeg to me...suggest removing the prop and watching the propshaft as you spin it..look for out of round turning and ,pulling on the propshaft, escessive free play < should be almost nil >.... a fixed pointer < nail on a board, etc.> close to the propshaft while turning makes the out of round < side to side, bent, or otherwise not straight> easier to detect

Also, you might be able to bolt on a "skeg guard" for appearance if everything else checks out.

That sounds like a plan. Thanks for the idea. I'll try that later today and post back.

I dont know if I have enough skeg left for a guard but that thought crossed my mind too.
