So, I have noticed this noise while i am turning, hard turns. Comin from the rear end. Does this sound like a winter project? I plan on removing the lower unit this winter and rebuilding the gimble bearing and put new u joints in it. Does this seem like i am on the right track here?
Side note- put new plugs in it today and dialed in the carb. She runs sooooooooo much smoother now

Re: Noise while turning.

Here is the background info on the work that I have done to the boat since I got it a month ago.
New plugs, wires, cap, rotor.
Changed oil/filter
Changed outdrive oil.
New water/fuel seperator.
Rebuilt carb.
Rebuilt alternator.
New belt.

As far as the outdrive oil is concerned, when I drained it, I swept my magnet through the oil and did not pick up any metal, shavings, chunks what have you. It was just black. It sounds like a whine, like a bad bearing almost when turning. I pumped 6 quarts through the lower unit, it pushed alot of the old oil out the top as well. As far as Im concerned I just need to know what this will all take to fix, with the ram and all.......I wanna be on the water on the weekends, i have time during the week to work on it. With all this going on, should I just wait till winter or take care of a small problem before it becomes a BIG problem?

Re: Noise while turning.

It's an SP-A or newer drive, still the AQ style of drive.
Here is a 2004 drive chart that shows the different drives.

Sounds like the same thing mine is doing. I pulled the drive off tonight and the ujoints were good to go. My problem is the gimbal bearing, it is noisy as hell.

Re: Noise while turning.

Did you check the drive bellows for water?
Are the u-joints rusted?

The PDS bearings or gimble bearing(whichever you have) may be something to check also.
If those go out while hauling across the lake...............$$$$$$

And, ringmaster, if your gimble bearing is very noisy....it may not be a bad idea to replace it. Maybe......
Your talking a difference of thousands for a repair or a hundred for a bearing.

Not sure why this is relevant to his drive since his doesn't have a gimbal bearing.

Ringmaster has a Mercruiser (or at least he posts his problem in the Merc forum) which is a completely different system from your system jetman.
You don't even have a gimbal bearing. you need to remove the clamp and see if there is water in the bellows. DO IT NOW. If there is water in there, things go bad and break a lot of other expensive things on the way out.

Fix it now or fix more later. Your wallet.

Re: Noise while turning.

Well, I am going to check the bellows tomorrow for water. We got the boat for a steal, and being our first boat. I am going to do what I need to get us by for a couple years. As far as pulling the drive off and replacing the u-joints, I just need to know about how painful it is to do. I am a mechanic for a living, just never owned a boat till this one. I will let you know what I find tomorrow. Thanks guys.

Re: Noise while turning.

If you have all the needed seals/orings and ujoints you could easily change the ujoints over a weekend.

Unsure with your particular model but you may not need to remove the entire drive. Just the transmission housing.

Re: Noise while turning.

Sweet! I am going to do it next week. pulled the bellows off today. Yup, water. Rusty joints as well. Should I just get a new assembly or try to put new u-joints in. I have a press.
