Hi all,
I have found myself in a pretty helpless and desperate circumstance with my Larson 235 hampton powered by the 4.3L GL Volvo Penta with SX drive.
Whilst cruising at approx 3700 rpm for 10 mins or recently, 5 mins, we hear a thud coming from the back part of the boat, apart from feeling something on our feet. Prior to putting the boat back up on land to try and solve the problem, we went out for a day on the boat, and whilst cruising to our destination, we heard the noise twice, spent the day on the boat, and on our way back, the noise was heard nearly immediately after cruising the boat. The best way to describe the noise is as though we hit something floating in the sea since the noise is not constant but just one thud every now and then.
Apart from hearing this thud noise, at low revs, we hear the humming of a bearing from the z-drive. When dismantling the z-drive completely, no gears were found to be damaged but two bearings on the lower gear unit were found to be pitted and hence replaced. However our mechanic told us that he finds it very strange how the thud noise could have been coming from the Z-drive. Can it be that such a noise was as a result of damaged bearings? I forgot to mention that one time, as we heard the noise, we had a very slight loss of power for a second or even less.
I have no idea what this may be, whether it is coming from the drive or engine. From where can I try to start diagnosing the problem, or perhaps some of you guys out there had this same problem.
Advice will be greatly appreciated as I'm pretty desperate here!!!!
