Thanks in advance,
1984 Seaswirl, 302 ford fuel injected. Has 2 fuel pumps primary right before filter and second on the back of intake. The first one is very warm to the touch and whiney/squealy. Second pump is cool and no noise. I assume first pump should be the same??

Motor runs rough from aprox 2000 rpm to about 3500 rpm. Could this possibly be related if first pump is starving second pump. ?? Is the first pump just a low pressure lift type pump?

Thanks again, jeff

Re: Noisey fuel pump

Have any model numbers on your engine? EFI wasn't available in 84. Sounds like it's been repowered with a newer model.

PS In general, air is what causes pump noise.

The first low presure pump should have a small whine (almost not noticable) and feel warm to the touch (not hot enough that you can't hold it). If it is getting hot and whining loudly, you are causing it to fight for pumping fuel. My case was that there was debris and broken down paint inside lines and clogged both screens on my pumps and filled in the bottom of the reservoir tank under the rear pump. First step would be to change the filter if it isn't new and blow some air up the center channel of the filter bracket to see if any debris falls out from sticking to the screen of your fuel pump. Next take off your rear pump and see if there is any debris in that screen filter. If you find any, you will probably have to flush the entire fuel system to get it right; I had to. There is the possibility that one of the pumps is worn, but it will make more of a mechanical grinding noise rather than a whine. If so, they sell aftermarket ones at autozone for about $100 each that are marine rated and the same output specs.

Re: Noisey fuel pump

I know ford fuel pumps on their cars with the 5.0L is a bit noisy, and you could check the filter on the pump to see if it needs to be cleaned or replaced.

You should hear it slightly at idle and you should not hear the noise when you accelerate.
