Hoping someone can help me with a noisy pump. This is on my 91 Evinrude 100 HP VE100SLEIE. I just got my boat out of storage and this noise was not there last year when it was put away. Engine runs fine and this noise started after about 5 minutes of idling. I can feel the tapping noise coming out of the VRO pump. Sounds like the plunger moving back and forth. I am running premix and am not using the oil part of the pump. Before I pull the pump off and look inside, thought maybe someone might have an idea on what could be wrong. I might even drop it in the lake and see if it goes away.........thanks for any advise

Re: Noisy fuel pump

If you were using the oil side before and now you are not, the oil acts as a "noise dampener" as the diaphram slaps back and forth. Now that it's dry, you may hear some slap. Should be a "ticking" and not a "knocking". Tough to discern or describe on a web board.

Thanks Angus.....it is set up no different than last year. The sound is definitely a plastic noise. I can actually feel the tap when I put my hand on the pump.

Re: Noisy fuel pump

Anyone with an idea? The original post was running on muffs.
This weekend I was able to drop her in the lake. The pump definitely makes a lot of noise. Engine idles fine. Once I accelerate, the motor will run out of fuel. I did manage to get it up to 4000Rpm for 5-10 seconds and then it would start surging and eventually almost quit running. I would stop and let it idle for a minute and away it would go again.
Can the fuel pump go bad over winter?
Can I repair it or do I need to replace?
Only other thing I cannot verify is if the pickup tube in the tank is being restricted.
Any help would be appreciated.

thanks

Re: Noisy fuel pump

Tank vent open? Primer bulb get sucked flat? Signs of a stuck check valve in the bulb or clogged pickup in the tank. Squeeze the bulb a time or two when the engine begins to die. If it picks up as you squeeze, chances are the fuel pump needs replacing.

Re: Noisy fuel pump

Could be sucking air too, a VRO will click a whole heck of a lot more if you are.

themarinedoctor.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?board=Cot;action=display;num=1113875906]www.themarinedoctor.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?board=Cot;action=display;num=1113875906

That should give you an idea of what is normal clicking. Fix it before you blow the engine.

Re: Noisy fuel pump

I am with paul. an air leak of the fuel suction side makes the oil side go nuts.

Re: Noisy fuel pump

I have a built in tank. The vent is ok. The bulb is always full. The pickup tube is ok.

Air leaks? Well the lines "look" ok, but I see it's time to pull them and inspect all the connections.

This place cracks me up.
Paul.......I watched the video and that's exactly what it's doing.

Well I couldn't wait, so I found a cracked line and one bad connection. After I get a few supplies, I'll let you know how it worked.

thanks for the help so far. ;)

Re: Noisy fuel pump

Air in the fuel line is the most common cause of the "VRO" clicking rapidly. Use a piece of clear hose at the pump inlet and watch for bubbles at all speeds.

If the motor spits or backfires often at idle or when running on a hose, it is possible to damage the plastic check valves inside the pump, and the diaphragm will pulse back and forth with the crankcase pulses. The internal "wagon wheel" fuel valve could be cracked and/or a link disconnected which would aslo make sounds. In either case a new pump would then be needed.

Noisy fuel pump...........Update finally fixed....whoohoo

Noisy fuel pump...........Update finally fixed....whoohoo

Finally had some decent weather to go boating.
Thank you, thank you, to Paul and his video link.
I replaced the main fuel line and 1 new clamp and the engine ran excellent all day long. There was nothing wrong with the pump, it was sucking air. Just shows how the simple things can be overlooked.

I have said this before, "this site has some great info".

Thanks again for the help.8)
