The owner's manual for my Mercury OptiMax 250 says, to keep the cowling shiny, "Wax the surface using a non‑abrasive automotive polish (polish designed for clear coat finishes)." Can anyone recommend a specific product that would work well here?

Turtle wax, Simonize, Meguire's etc.Use whatever suits you.

What they mean by non-abrasive is do not use " compound" which is designed to remove surface oxidation and if used too aggressively or too often will remove the paint right down to the base.
