I've got my 1985 V6 150hp Evinrude block bored out and ready to start re-assembly (all new pistons, 1 at .030 over) and the manual that I have tells me to use a "non-hardening" sealer on the gasket surfaces and the threads of some of the screws.

Can someone fill me in on exactly what I can use for the "non-hardening" sealer?

I do have the Permatex anarobic "gasket-maker" for the crankcase.

Mik

OMC/Bombi sells the stuff. It comes in a small can with a brush in the top. Sealer 1000 is another and should be avaliable at an auto parts place. I would get the OMC stuff. It is cheap compared to the possible consequences of using the wrong stuff.

The correct sealer is OMC Gel- Seal, The surface has to be proparly prepared for this sealer. All old sealer has to be removed. When you have the old sealer removed with a sharp scaper, clean with acetone, or lacquer thinner, then prime the surface with loc-tite primer. Before you aply the Gel-Seal, wash your hands with soap & water. This sealer has to be free of any contamination or you will have a blow-out between the case halve's.

I do have the Permatex anarobic "gasket-maker" for the crankcase
That's not what you want to use for the crankcase halves. You need the stuff R.Johnson mentioned, or the substitutes Loctite 518 or Permatex 51813. I could be wrong about the permatex number, but its something like that.

Permatex #4 aviation gasket sealer, this is the same stuff, also called Gasket Goo. It's what I use on all my gaskets (except head gaskets), never had a problem.

I do have the Permatex 51813. I'll have to find some of the locktite primer.

Thanks for the help.

Mik

Mik, I've never used primer and have never had any sealing problems. Just clean the surfaces very, very good and wipe with acetone or even alcohol.

I noticed that the instructions on the 51813 mention to spray one side with the primer and coat the other side with the gasket maker. Apparently it hardens it.

Mik
