Non-Running Electric Trolling Motor

Hello, I am fairly new to Iboats and owning a boat in particular. I have a 1964 Starcraft alumimum boat with a outboard 65 hp and a old Sears Ted Williams Signature electric trolling motor and the trolling motor will not run when connected to the battery that starts the outboard motor. I had the model number but not with me at this time. This electric motor is one I have never seen before as it has a red switch on the top that shows FWD/OFF/REV and a radio dial speed control from 1 to 10 and on the end of the guide bar is a cigarette lighter? The wiring has a mini version of battery jumper connectors to clip to the battery. I have tried different batteries with no luck but not sure where to go from here. There is a tag on the top of the motor that says 1978 Ohio on it not what this is? I really could use some help to know weather to chuck this motor and buy a Minn Kota 45-55 lb thrust transom mount motor?

Throw it away and be done with it. Chances are the outboard is old too. At least that way have something reliable to get you to shore or home.

You can try removing the cover at the head of the unit. Locate the black and red wires and wire them directly to a battery. If the motor doesn't run on full speed, it is likely junk. Some motors have a safety switch in them that prevents the motor from running in the stowed position. Ensure the motor is deployed and then try it.

Boating is supposed to be fun. Not about worrying what's going to work and get you home or not. That thing is old. The shaft seals are probably rotten and even if you get to work it will probably fail in a short period of time. forget it

Thanks for the advice. I will fiddle with it this winter and if nothing else before spring buy a Transom mounted Minn Kota 55 lb thrust from Sears or somewhere?

Thanks again.
