carpet was pulled from the deck leaving just the fiberglass underneath. looking to paint it and was thinking non-skid. i've looked and the marine paint seems to run pretty expensive (50 to 75 a gal). went to home depot and saw some outside paint that is used on pool decks, tennis courts, and etc. can i use this and add the non-skid additive? do i need to prime first? degrease? or what can i do?

I wouldn't go the route you're thinking. First off all of that material is water based ( latex or acrylic ) and it just won't have the holding qualities of a good mineral based paint. Priming, cleaning is always a very important step in proper paint adhesion - if not the most important.
Don't know what kind of boat you've got but a gallon of marine topside paint will go a long way - I could paint the hull of a 30 footer with leftovers ! A quart will be plenty - $26.00 to $30.00 and you're done. Non skid material can be found at any good marine purveyor. Please stick with the real stuff, just don't go digging in the back yard for some sand. If you want something really aggressive crushed walnut shells ( not kidding ) have been used for years. Of course depending on how much you crush em'. Remember the prep, it really is important.

Basically it is a trade off. You can pay $$$ up front and do it once, or you can spend $ and do it every year. Painting is very time intensive so it just depends on how much you value your time.

Have you thought about using a spray in bed liner? Not the stuff from walmart but from a dealer with professional application? Just food for thought I have not done this.
