So, just bought my first boat a few weeks ago...a 1967 15' tri-hull open bow Cruisers Inc. w/ 67, 60 horse johnson...250 bucks and it runs pretty good!...now for the SHT..
First time launching the boat goes great...smooth launch 2 hour ride and retrieval...2nd time not so good...First off...the whole ride to the ramp my brain is repeating "dont forget the plug, dont forget the plug"..haha yea right...by the time i got the trailer lined up correctly and made sure everything was unhooked from boat to trailer and launched...I FORGOT THE PLUG!!
No biggie right...i hear everyone does it at least once...so by the time i park the truck and get the plug in I have a good amount of water in the stern...a guy at the ramp says just take it out and gas the throttle then pull the plug and let it drain...well i had my girl and her kid with me so didnt wanna do that with them on the boat..my trucks parked with the traile almost in the water in a different spot at this "ramp" (more like a beach area where everyone launches)...so instead of moving trailer...i pull boat over to it...really steep drop as soon as you get into the water..so I back the trailer down..latch the tow line up and begin to winch it in...the bow raises up on the rollers, the stern (being full of water) drops BELOW the water line and a mini niagra falls pours in over the transom...i run to my truck...bang it in 4 wheel drive and gun it to try to pull it out...my tow rope SNAPS..My truck axel SNAPS...and i regretably watch my boat sink and my truck get towed to my house.....Needless to say I pulled all liquids out (gas tank, oil etc.) waited for low tide until the water was below transom and bailed out...borrowed a truck and towed the boat home...fresh water rinsed the ENTIRE engine for about 20 minutes..pulled plugs and cranked..sprayed wd-40 on ENTIRE engine in cylinders etc...and today it still ran great..Long story short..Im making my mistakes early so they HOPEFULLY never happen again...pix to follow..
