Having a problem with the controls on my circa '97 12v Norcold DC-340D. I discovered items were freezing up in the fridge & when I tried to use the temp controls, the compressor would not shut off even when the knob was turned to off! I switched off the external power to the fridge & waited 10-15 mins with the door open until it warmed up a bit. It then started to operate normally.

Further troubleshooting finds that when this problem occurs, the clicking sound the temp control normally makes when adjusting the temp does not occur until I let the fridge defrost for a little while. Since it is the old style control inside the fridge (newer models the knob is external) I can't really tell what the mechanism is for switching power on & off thru the adjustment. I'm guessing it might be some piece of bi-metal that is freezing up or something.

Just wondering if anyone has had a similar problem or knows how the mechanism works so I can troubleshoot. Thanks!

Re: Norcold fridge problem

Your diagnosis sounds correct.

It is probably not possible to effect an acceptable repair to the existing bimetal thermostat, so a replacment part is the best bet.

There are plenty of replaced Norcold refrigerators and plenty more to come, so obtaining a good used part is possible.

Hmm, that's a good suggestion. I'll have to figure out how its attached inside the fridge.
