What is the approx. idle temperature for a 1986 Johnson 150 VRO? My Temp gauge is reading around 120 degrees F in about 50 degree water. What should be approx cruising temp also? Ive searched the forum for similar posts for equivelent engines and came up empty. Thanks for any info, always greatly appreciated.

I think around 140 degrees. Others may confirm. You should be OK at 120.

Re: Normal operating temp?

It may be hard to suggest temp without knowing where the temp sensor is positioned. Apparently this set up is new to you? I would confirm the temp is at normal temp at idle as suggested by solittle. You can do this by letting the engine warm up and laying your fingers on the flat place on top of the block just forward of the heads. If you can lay your fingers there for several seconds without removing them, then the temp should be within specks. Check the temp gage for a reference and then run the engine at various rpms to get a good reference of engine temps. This should give you something to go by during normal operation.

Stay in touch.

Re: Normal operating temp?

Thanks guys, use of a temp gauge on this boat is new to me, didnt work when I bought it late season. The sensor is located on the portside head on a bracket, its a contact style sensor. most ppl Ive spoke to say that they arent accurate but will be accurate enough to see overheating. Thanks again.
