Think they were good boats while in production. Considered buying a '74 model one time but vetoed by the wife, They were roomy and sizes I remember were about 20 to 24 foot.

I had a 22' North American with an omc I/O setup when stationed in Jacksonville, Fl. Used to go out to Blackmars Reef (approx 30 mi from shore) and catch a bunch of bottom type fish. Loved the boat. It was a good bit heavier than new fiberglass boats. It seems like the glass was lots thicker. In my mind that means stronger.

Re: North American boats?

A North American S-22 was our family boat for 20+ years, until my Dad - the finest man in the world - passed away.

We bought that boat in '79, in the middle of the gas crisis. Everyone driving datsuns and toyotas and dad would only buy 20-yr-old buick le sabres and the such.... man, we went through a ton of $800 cars!

We had the std 190 hp OMC, and repowered it with an underpowered Mercruiser in the '92 timeframe. It was a very heavy and solid boat - boy, I miss that boat (and my dad!)

I believe they were made in Ft Lauderdale not sure when production stopped; but, I'm guessing in the early 80's... the gas crisis did a number on the boating industry.... seems like companies either went under or cut corners to lighten up the boats for towing with cars with smaller engines.
