Dialogue? Who needs dialogue? We are the big kid on the block, let's just show them that.

Unfortunately for those of you believing the above, dialogue just may get the desired results of disarming KJI.

Re: North Korea

You actually think NK suddenly had this desire to have dialog with the west? I think not.

China told them straighten your act out or we won't come to your aid if you f**k up and the west comes after you.

You gotta look deeper than the surface man.

Re: North Korea

I think NK cares a lot more about what China says than what we say, and I think China will bring them in line.

China is already the big kid on the block in Asia.

Hey we could "redeploy". We could pay them extortion. How about the UN? And heck if he kills a few hundred thousand people isn't that really his right.

China will not let NK spoil the Olympic Games. Korea will become quieter and all but disappear by game time. Once the games are over, NK will be allowed to posture again imo.

Any agreement with NK, no matter who is involved in it, is going to involve hefty "incentives" (i.e. extortion)

You really think they are somehow going to tremble and cave at the idea the US (or China)doesn't approve of their behavior?

Nope, it was not "sudden desire." I believe they have wanted to talk for quite some time now. They have only tested and acted like a spoiled child to get the attention of the US. Now they have it and probably feel like they are sitting at the table with some leverage. Leverage, they otherwise would not have. China does/can not give them leverage when speaking to the US. The leverage was something they had to get on their own. Whether or not they truly have it is irrelevant because they probably believe they have it.

So, thanks for the advice of looking deeper than the surface. May I offer you the same? China has a great deal of influence over NK, no doubt. But, what has caused NK to dismiss / ignore China to this point? China could not stop them from testing or developing nukes...or at least they didn't. China does not have that great an influence. Just look at the last couple of years if you need proof of that.

Believing China has enough influence over NK to keep them in the same line they have been walking while their people starve is looking no deeper than the surface. Bottom line, they are starving even with the support of China, Kim Jong Il needs more than China to survive. He now has want he wanted...bargaining power.

What leverage?? What bargaining power??
They have a nuke that doesn't work and missiles that can hit the Sea of Japan on a good day.

The only talking we should be doing is to tell China to reign in thier dog before we have to put it under.

Re: North Korea

bekosh and water,

Then why is the US even concerned with NK? Why is the US at the table with them as we speak? You both know the US is at the table with them....right? Why the concern over testing.

Except for ignorance on your part, I don't understand why you believe NK has no leverage. The fact the US has sat down at the table with them to discuss their weapons and negotiate must tell you something. If there was nothing to negotiate, the US would not be there.

The reason why North Korea is becoming a bit more reasonable is very capitalistic indeed.
A while ago the USA ordered all the assets belonging to a bank in Macao frozen, unless the bank would freeze all assets belonging to North Korean officials. This had a huge ripple effect and these North Koreans cannot borrow or stash money anywhere in the world anymore. Now our good corrupt communist officials are feeling the crunch and now that their own private life is becoming less pleasant, they are willing to show some common sense.

Hey Rolmops, Don't agree with you very often, but your spot on here. NK are masters at counterfitting our $. Shut that down and KJI can't pay for that red French Wine he likes. JR
